Painting the Glareshield
Even though i am making a nice vinyl covering for the glareshield, i decided to scuff and paint the glareshield flat black, just in case you end up seeing some of it around the edges, or through the defrost fan holes etc.
Painting the Canopy Frame
To paint the canopy frame, i scuffed the existing primer with scotchbrite, including the exposed rivets. I then cleaned very thoroughly, and hung it from the ceiling. It was painted in the same color as the rest of the cockpit - Stewart Systems EkoCrylic, in Boulder Grey with 4:1 flattener. The seal retainers and the canopy side shims were also painted on the external side.
I also setup some fine line tape on the edge of my scrap bit of plexi-glass, and scuffed this with scotchbrite. I will use this as a test to see how the canopy looks with a strip of paint along the edge.
I hung it like this, as it allowed me to reach all areas of the canopy in on go - without having to wait for anything to dry / flip it over etc. |
This is the piece of canopy scrap i am using as a test. |
Testing the method of masking the edges, as well as the actual window surface. |
Of course, here are some glory shots of the frame installed on the airframe, with the paint nicely matching.
