Wiring - Relay Holder Mounting / Wiring Channel Modification

I have a number of relays in my plan - 4 are related to the SDS system (fuel pump and ignition coils). There is one for the pitot heat (so i don't have to run a heavy wire up to the panel and back down again), and i have one spare.

I will be using Narva 68048 Relays, as these have a suppression diode, and normally open and normally closed contacts. They are rated at 40 amps on the normally open contacts, and 30 amps on the normally closed.

To mount these, i am using Narva 68084 Relay holders. These take crimp pins which are PN 56224 - 6.3mm (1/4").

These were mounted on the modified forward tunnel cover F-14105 - a hole in the cover allows the wiring to pop-up from underneath, with a service loop to allow access to the holders without too much stretching.

I think these should work well - out of the way, but very easy to change a relay if need be. The wires are held in using the crimp connectors, and are easily removed once you unscrew either the whole forward tunnel cover, or just one bank of relay holders. All the relays are the same, so interchangeable. There is one spare (at the moment anyway!)

This is the back of the holders. The crimp pins slide in and are held with a small tang. They can be easily removed by inserting a small screw-driver into the front and pulling the pin out.

To fit the smaller diameter wiring (as with most Molex type pins), you need to clip off some length from the insulation clamping tangs.

The unclipped tangs are too long for the thin Tefzel wires.

This is about right.

I noted that it would be handy of the wiring channel lower section was removed. The below photo is looking aft, at the back of the circuit breaker panel. If i could remove thie section, then wires could be run though here (including to the relay deck) much more easily, and without risk of abrasion on the channel.

This is the section i would want to remove.

I asked Van's, and this was their reply. So i will remove that in a future post.
