30-03: The BIG JOIN! (& initial tailcone riveting)

The BIG JOIN!

The long awaited big join is here! With much trepidation - and little fanfare, the tail was clecod to the fuselage with little fuss whatsoever. It only took a couple of hours. In the end it was a total non-event - the instructions are spot on.

With the tail cleco'd on, we measured across the horizontal stab attach bolts and the main fuselage longerons for twist - and it was perfect! This kit is totally amazing.

I used the baggage floor skins to make some plywood floors for climbing in and riveting.

Initial Riveting

The riveting of the tailcone starts with the riveting of the seatbelt lugs together. They are then riveted to the baggage bulkheads. The fuselage was setup on the workbenches and supported, and i gingerly climbed into the cockpit for the riveting. Then forgot something, so climbed out again. Then back in. The forgot something.

8 rivets took 45 mins!!! and i quickly realised i needed to build a rotisserie

These rivets were set with the gun and bar, and a lot of contorting.
