My new skins arrived via FedEx in way less time than I thought - only about 10 days. Very impressed with Van's service.
These were deburred, cleaned, etched and primed (like i already did with the other RH skins!).
However, THIS TIME, i made sure to offer the skins up to the RH aileron nose rib and skin assembly, and make damn sure i didn't get them backwards. I labelled them - profusely!
Clever packaging - this was only $30 USD from the states via FedEx. |
Can you imagine if i did it twice? |
These photos show the difference between how water 'sheets' off the cleaned and etched surface, and how it beads on the unprepared surface. To get the primer to stick, you need to see this sheeting.
Water is beading off the unprepared side... |
But is a nice even 'sheet' on the cleaned and etched side. |
This is what the 'sheet' of water looks like after around 10 mins. |
I let the parts dry completely, then give them a quick once-over with Iso Alcohol to make sure there is no debris, or water left before priming. I remembered to tape off the trailing edges on these skins where the trailing edge wedge will be.
Once the skins were dry, i dimpled them (except the trailing edges), and was able to rivet the stiffners back on, which i had removed from the botched right hand skins.
I was then able to cleco the whole assembly togehter, cleco on the trailing edge and mark and drill this piece. The trailing edge was removed and trimmed, then put back in-situ so i could file the ends to match the skins nicely. It was then removed adn deburred etc, ready to be cleaned and taped in at a later date.
This got the right hand aileron to the same stage as the left. Time to start some riveting.
