With a backrivet place costing around $45 from cleveland, plus the shipping! (can you imagine) i called a local steel fabrication place and asked for some "cold rolled" steel plate - the guy was great, and told me to come and see the reception girl, who would show me to the scrap pile and i could take what i wanted.
I ended up with a few bits and pieces. I don't think they are cold rolled, or if they are they have been painted.
A few hours of elbow grease with some sandpaper and scotchbite wheel and i have myself a free bucking bar. I also drilled and CSK a female dimple in the corner. I used this to set a dimple in the end of the ribs on the practice control surface kit - drop in a rivet, and hit with a hammer. Worked beautifully! (certainly better than the rubbish "close quarters" pull rivet dimple die anyways).
Here is the completed plate. I did the first part of the practice kit (2 sheets into an angle) again to have a go at backriveting - which worked well. You just have to count the whacks of the gun as you can't see the shophead. After a while it went very fast. The few small surface blemishes didn't show up at all on the skin or rivets - there was a layer of tape between the 2 anyway.
